Igniter

Comedy Film Challenge

Presented by Canadian Film Fest and Firecracker Department

Think fast, shoot faster! Igniter is your chance to make a comedy short in just one month from prompt to picture.

Each year, The Comedy Igniter showcases bold new voices in Canadian comedy filmmaking.

Presented by Canadian Film Fest in partnership with Firecracker Department, this nationwide challenge invites female and non-binary filmmakers to bring their funniest ideas to life—on a deadline. Over the course of four fast-paced weeks, participants go from concept to completion, creating original comedic short films inspired by a surprise creative prompt from one of our favourite comedy artists.

With mentorship from top industry professionals, curated workshops, and team-building opportunities, The Comedy Igniter offers more than just accountability—it’s a supportive creative sprint designed to sharpen your skills, expand your network, and showcase your voice. The challenge culminates in a live screening of selected films at the Canadian Film Fest, complete with juried feedback, prizes, and festival access.

Whether you're an emerging filmmaker or looking to challenge your comedy chops, The Comedy Igniter is where stories get made, careers get sparked, and comedy takes centre stage.
